The plot is based on Bram Stoker's Dracula. Renfield (Dwight Frye) takes a trip to Transylvania to finalize a deal with Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi) before he moves to England. At the castle, Renfield is attacked by Dracula and is hypnotized to become his servant. Together, Dracula and the mad Renfield make their way to London aboard the doomed ship, Demeter, to settle into the ruins of Carfax Abbey from which he launches attacks against local women in an attempt to feed and hypnotize more victims.
He sets his sights upon Mina (Helen Chandler) and her close friend Lucy (Frances Dade). Mina's father, Dr. Seward (Herbert Bunston), and her fiancé, John Harker (David Manners), discover the supernatural events too late to save Lucy from being hypnotized and killed by Dracula. They enlist the help of an expert, Dr. Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan), to assist them in protecting Mina from further assaults by Dracula.
The movie reaches its crescendo when Van Helsing discovers that Dracula is a vampire, resulting in an intense showdown in Dr. Seward's home. Dracula flees to the ruins of Carfax Abbey as the sun rises, but he is pursued by Van Helsing and John Harker. Together they discover Dracula's coffin and put an end to the vampire with a wooden stake, just in time to save Mina from his grasp.
